Alfred Health is committed to postgraduate medical education.

It is seen as an investment in the future for both the junior medical staff and the hospital.

Postgraduate medical education and training at Alfred Health is an integral part of the Hospital's operations and philosophy.  It is recognised that there is an inter dependence between the provision of high quality healthcare and the education of health professionals.

The hospital supports postgraduate medical education by providing a wide range of postgraduate educational activities together with a strong commitment by the senior medical staff, both full time and visiting in the provision of appropriate clinical experience and education support.  Senior medical staff  are appointed not only for their skills in patient care but also for their ability to teach and foster an environment of enquiry and learning.

The role of the Medical Education Officer (MEO) is to assist in facilitating educational training programs with particular support to the continuing of education to interns and PGY2's. Education programs for PGY1 and PGY2s are mapped to the Australian Curriculum framework.  The MEO works closely with the Director of Clinical Training, Supervisor of Intern Training, Supervisor of Physician Training, and Supervisors of SET training programs in the development and implementation of relevant educational programs.  Our Supervisors are not only dedicated to supporting our junior medical staff in their chosen career path but more importantly take a keen interest in their overall professional development.

In developing and implementing educational programs the Postgraduate Medical Education Unit seeks feedback from junior medical staff to ensure programs are tailored to fit your needs.

Some of the current programs are:

  •  Mentoring Program

- 2010 Mentor Prof Spelman

Our Mentor Program commenced in 2005 and has provided mentors to 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 interns.  Our mentors are Senior consultants who want to be involved with our junior staff and follow with great enthusiasm and interest their professional development and career paths.

Our Mentor philosophy is simple, to help create a connection between our Senior and Junior Medical Staff and provide a safe ‘haven' if you like where it is possible to share experiences, reflect, seek advice or discuss sensitive issues without prejudice with a senior member of staff who will have had similar such experiences.

On commencement as an intern at The Alfred you will be offered a mentor.  Like any relationship, it is two way and we have an expectation of our interns to be proactive.

We hope that the mentor/mentee relationship will develop and extend well beyond your interns years.  This is definitely a belief held firm by our Mentors.
