The (level 2) Special Care Nursery (SCN) cares for newborns and has recently been increased to a friendly 6 cot unit co-located with the Maternity Unit.
The unit provides care for low risk premature babies and their families in a supportive environment. The unit also cares for unwell babies. Here babies are stabilized and treated, or stabilized and sent off to a level 3 nursery.
The majority of families that choose to have their babies at Sandringham Hospital live in the surrounding community areas.
The SCN is staffed by specially trained nurses and midwives and has paediatric support by a 24 hour on-call service. The Paediatricians can also provide referral to our paediatric outpatient clinic for ongoing care and supervision if required.
The SCN takes babies from 34 weeks gestation and caters for a range of babies needs.
A breastfeeding support service is available to mothers and babies between the ages of newborn to three months who are having feeding difficulties or who need advice.
